What are my pads, tampons or panty liners made of?
Most mass-market brands do not use cotton, but rather materials such as rayon, which is obtained by chemical modifications from cellulose.
The use of synthetic superabsorbent polymers or SAP in pads is also very common (its use in tampons is prohibited due to its toxicity). Super absorbent polymers are currently made from the polymerization of acrylic acid, obtained through the refining of petroleum.
